Cooling Murals

Due to the urban heat island effect, cities maintain an average temperature of 1°F to 7°F higher than rural areas. This is particularly pressing, as 70% of humanity will live in cities by 2050. Higher temperatures can exacerbate public health risks from heat-related illnesses, like heat stroke and heart attacks, while facilitating infrastructure deterioration and higher energy consumption to maintain pleasant temperatures. These impacts are disproportionately experienced by those with underlying health concerns and marginalized communities. These communities need to be at the forefront of climate discourse to bring greater awareness of these disparities and help bring forth meaningful solutions.

This two-year initiative resulted in two murals that exemplified the synthesis of artistic inspiration and scientific innovation. Both are located in New Haven, Connecticut, and are informed by the specific community in which they were installed.
